UNDERGLIMMER

It was what the wandering pilgrim-poet Basho called “a glimpse of the underglimmer,” an experience of the deeply real that lurks everywhere beneath centuries of stereotypes and false images that prevent us from truly seeing other people, other places, other times.

Gameplay Shapes Minds

Our brains are essentially a biological recording device of events, feelings, and impulses. The experiences we record on our "brain-disk" during our gameplay shape how we are as people by strengthening connections in our memories. So try to accumulate positive recordings.

What is underglimmer?

If you have ever read a book or story that charged-up your imagination then you have experienced underglimmer. Every time you get a thrill being at the crossroads of busy travelers you have felt an underglimmer. Its a feeling of inspiration and wonder that also comes welling-up within you when you appreciate the depth of an artwork, or an ancient artifact wrapped in mystery, or a lost language that few can understand.

Underglimmer is what role-play gamers yearn to experience when they pool their imagination together and computer gaming players hope to feel by directing their virtual characters through strange places and strange challenges.

But to experience underglimmer you must (as the observer) feel like you are a part in the adventure. If everything you experience in a game feels irrelevant and all the elements of the environment you interact with feel like cold objects of only statistical value you'll miss it. The virtual world you are within loses its luster. It may make you feel like you are wasting your time. Success will occur when you can learn to interpret game mechanics as tools of expression. You can fill the in-between spaces with your powerful imagination. The activity is akin to exploring a museum with the hopes of understanding what each artist is trying to convey with their work.

Why this site?

This site is about exploring your gaming personality and helping you find some underglimmer in your own experiences. The entertainment industry creates open worlds in order to immerse you in their artistic vision. While ANY creative work or material objects can inspire these feelings I am focusing here on virtual gaming and open worlds. We as gameplayers seek the virtual places which give the most empowerment to author our own stories and find our own adventures.

Many of us watch others stream gameplay on the Internet because we want to feel engaged along with them. But you can join in. Stepping into Open World gaming may seem overwhelming if it is new to you. But like a simulated life in a fantasy world you just have to jump into it and learn as you go. Nothing can hurt you. There is nothing to fear.
